A lot of backyards in Westover start out as just a flat patch of grass with nothing to work with. No defined space. No reason to go outside and hang out. That's exactly what we were dealing with here - a clean slate behind a newer home that needed a real outdoor living area to match the house itself.
We built out a covered patio with tile laid directly on the slab. The tile pattern is clean and consistent, with tight grout lines that give it a finished, polished look you don't usually see on a basic backyard pad. The covered overhang ties right into the roofline, and there's a ceiling fan mounted up top - so this space actually works in the Alabama heat, not just on nice days.
The edge detail on the slab is one of those things that most people don't think about until they see it done right. A smooth, formed concrete edge all the way around keeps the whole thing looking intentional. Pine straw mulch beds were laid in along the perimeter to frame the patio and give it a finished border that ties into the rest of the yard.
What we ended up with is a backyard that actually gets used. The covered section gives you shade and shelter, and the tile extends out past the overhang to give you extra open-air space when the weather cooperates. It fits the house, it fits the yard, and it's built to hold up for years without a lot of maintenance.
This kind of work is what we do for homeowners all across Westover and the surrounding Shelby County area. If your backyard is just sitting there not doing much, a setup like this is one of the best ways to actually get value out of that space.
